December Daily 2015 Album Walk Through

As December approaches at a terrifying pace I find myself both a little overwhelmed with how quickly the holidays are approaching, as well as filled with that inexhaustible Christmas zeal that I think terrifies everyone who knows me. Luckily, this combination was the motivation I needed to get my unfinished December Daily album out from last year and finally put on the finishing touches. I had completed most of it at the beginning of this year, but found myself out of steam around the time that the bigger layouts of the last week of December rolled around. But now, now it is finally finished! (mostly, at least) And I am so proud because this is the very first scrapbook I have actually finished!

For those who don't know, December Daily is an awesome scrapbooking project created by Ali Edwards. She has a lot of great videos and blog posts explaining the project and what it means to her here: http://aliedwards.com/projects/december-daily . December Daily is the perfect opportunity for me to combine my love of beautiful things with the traditions of the holidays. It lets me document all the special memories we spend so much time and effort creating. And most importantly, it forces me to see the people and activities around me with a more intentional and grateful heart. I love this project, I love the holidays, and I love having an excuse to use my creativity in a different way.

I've decided to include both a video walk through, as well as photos for each page of my album. My album is large, large enough that I actually had to split it into two 6x8 albums because I couldn't fit it all in one. Because of that, there are going to be a lot of photos here, so apologies if this gets a little lengthy. I'm not going to list or link all my sources, but I do have a really good memory for superfluous details, so I can probably tell you where anything in the album came from - if you're interested, just ask below in the comments! And finally, as fair warning, I batch edited all these photos to brighten them up a little, so the coloring may be off on some. I hope you enjoy looking through! (Video walk through is at the bottom for those who prefer that)

My cover page is just a simple transparency that I cut down to size. I added the December Daily rubber banner and chipboard numbers from Ali's main kit. The cover page sits over top of my intentions page which is pictured below.

I decided to do a write up of why I love Christmas so much, rather than focusing on a specific theme or intention.

To cap off the opening section I included a photo of our little family, I'm so glad I made a point to get a photo of us all together for just this purpose.

My first story was about the advent calendars my boyfriend and I made for each other at the very end of November. This story continues onto the back as well.

For day 2 I chose to document the story of making gifts for my mom this year instead of buying them. To break up the page I added a flip up pocket to conceal the journaling under the "Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas" 3x4.

The story from day 2 continued onto the backside again and then I used a transparent divider from the main kit to end with. The photo behind is of the rain outside our car window for the story of day 3, I like the way it transitions between the two. (Sorry for the reflection!)

Day three was all about picking out our Christmas tree. It was super rainy all night, but we decided to power though and found a beautiful tree and some reindeer friends!

I decided to make a shaker pocket out of pine needles from our tree and so far they're lasting pretty well! I didn't add anything to them, just simply scoped up some of the needles from the floor, let them dry out a bit, and then used my fuse tool to secure them in the pocket.

We host game night once a month at our place and December 4th was the day for that, which made for an easy story. Since there wasn't a single photo that really stood out from that night I chose to use a few photos and made a waterfall style display that I slipped into the popcorn bag.

I love interactive elements, so this one is really fun for me. Each picture is printed as an Instax photo and then taped with washi along the bigger bottom edge. (I printed the photos upside down so I could use the bigger edge to secure them to the page).

I used another gorgeous transparency from the main kit to divide days 4 and 5, and added the alphas on top as an intro to the story of road tripping in search of snow.

Day 5 is all about a day trip to Leavenworth, WA and all of the excitement of finally seeing some snow!

Leavenworth is an adorable Bavarian style town that goes all out for Christmas. We had a chance to visit the Nutcracker Museum, wander through fun shops, and even saw horses pulling carriages in the snow.

We stayed for the Christmas parade and tree lighting ceremony and it was so wonderfully festive.

Day 6 begins our Hanukkah story. Full disclosure: no one in our house is actually Jewish, but my bestie/roommate and I have always loved learning about the Jewish holidays and traditions and have celebrated Hanukkah together for years. We choose themes to give gifts in and have traditions new and old every year. I may love Hanukkah even more than Christmas in our home.

As you can see, many of my days became multi-page layouts which is how my album became so huge so quickly.

Day 7 is one of my favorite layouts, and ironically, one of the easiest. I chose to reflect on things I was thankful for this day. I printed them out and then cut them into strips. They have foam squares behind them to raise them up off the page, and that's it!

Day 8 is the story of Deck the Hall Ball, a day long concert series put on by the local alternative radio station which is always a blast. I made the pocket divider to store the number and my "ticket" which was just a screenshot of the eticket on my phone.

I love how this pocket turned out, I think it really captures the fun and spirit of the day.

I wanted to include a couple more band photos without adding in another page, so I made another transparent divider then adhered the photos onto that, back to back.

I think choosing to keep to a very cohesive color scheme and theme within each story but not necessarily the entire album helps to keep the album interesting while also keeping the longer stories visually together.

Because this week was so packed with activities, I took advantage of the "down day" of the 9th to add in this fun list of Christmas songs that Bando provided as a free printable. I love this illustrators work (Kendra Dandy aka Bouffants and Broken Hearts) and love that it serves as a reminder for me of the work I was really getting excited about. I added in a small vellum pocket divider to include a postcard by Anna Rifle Bond that starts telling the story of the Nutcracker Ballet for day 10.

On the backside of the vellum pocket divider I attached a 4x6 photo of us all dressed up and ready for the ballet. I then included a 6x8 print out of one of Ian Falconers illustrations for the new rendition of the PNB Nutcracker. I like that the illustration theme carries out across all of these various elements.

The Nutcracker this year was honestly one of the most visually stunning and inspiring things I have ever seen. Ian Falconer designed entirely new sets and costumes for the show and they were so incredible I know my words cannot do them justice. I knew I wanted to include a variety of photos to remember this feeling of awe, but since you obviously can't take photos during the ballet I went online and found some promotional photos to print off instead. Also, because I am a crazy person, I made a picture frame out of one of my favorite papers from the main kit by cutting out the center with an exacto knife and then added washi tape with mitered corners to finish it off.

Day 11 is all about our Hanukkah feast! We decided to celebrate with a night of traditional Hanukkah foods including homemade latkes, noodle kugel, challah bread with honey butter, jelly filled doughnuts and more! Laurie read Hershel and the Hanukkah Goblins to us which is a tradition from her childhood that I always love.

I also used this day to tell the story of Mike signing us up for the "Eight Sensible Gifts for Hanukkah" from the guys at Cards Against Humanity. The gifts were predictably hilarious and wonderful and it made every night we got to open them so much fun.

I punched holes in a 4x6 journal card and added it in as a place for Laurie and I to both share some of the reasons why we love Hanukkah.

Here's the end of the first album! I decided to keep it simple with a beautiful 6x8 page from the main kit that I only added a little deer embellishment to. Now, on to the next one!

I knew I wanted a fun way to include the Christmas cards we had received in the album, and luckily inspiration struck when I saw this Starbucks bag that Laurie had brought home for me to include! I used the bottom portion of the bag where the majority of this beautiful pattern was, and then I chopped off the handles to use as the loops on the backside to keep it in place.

The bag was mercifully the exact height of the largest card I wanted to include. It's still a pretty snug fit though, so I pared down the collection of cards I had to ones that included personal messages or had special attachments to.

I love that the backside of the card pouch shows the "please reuse" message.

Day 12 is all about decorating the Christmas tree!  I had a few different visions for this set of pages and what I hoped to do. I knew I wanted to include multiple photos by cutting them down into circles, and I knew I wanted it to have a lot of sparkle and confetti, but what I had in mind was a little different from this version. I really enjoy how it turned out though, especially the quote on top of the tree and all the chunky glitter and loose embellishments.

I made sure to get a photo of each person putting an ornament on the tree so that the pages could have some life and movement to them.

At the beginning of the month I asked my mom to write me a note to include in my album. I gave her a few suggestions on what she could write about, and I love that what I got back was so beautiful and personal. I saved space in my album next to photos of us unboxing the gifts my parents sent.

I am originally from Montana, and this year more than any other I was really pining for a good old fashioned white Christmas. It was on my mind all month, so on the 14th I decided to tell a story of the weather both in my original hometown of Billings, MT and my current home of Bellevue, WA.

I also added another flip up pocket to journal under. The glitter on the front side is glued on for the most part, but being able to seal it into a contained pocket is a nice assurance that the whole album wont be covered in glitter with one wrong move. I also used a Studio Calico 4x6 journal card to make a list of the bigger gifts I sent to my family. The flip side is the same thing but with gifts for my boyfriend and bestie.

Day 15 is all about the joy of giving. Getting to find the perfect gifts for my loved ones really does make me happier than almost anything else, and I especially love getting to buy things for my mom and sister that I know they wouldn't buy for themselves.

I saw a cute idea on Pinterest where someone had created their own cake topper numbers out of hot glue and confetti and knew I wanted to try that technique in my album at some point. It was both a fun and frustrating experiment, but I think the outcome is definitely worth it. I used the chunky sparkles to highlight the story of the crazy lights my neighbors put up on their balcony every year. It wouldn't be Christmas to me without getting to come home every day to this overly festive balcony. Christmas in the city!

For day 17 I used the box from a new set of lights we purchased this year to create a divider page. I cut the box down using a box cutter and attached card stock onto the back that I could write and draw directly on. The 18th was all about seeing the new Star Wars movie, of course! We were the nerds in the front row with all of our friends, probably laughing and crying the hardest.

The pictures from inside the theater were terrible of course, so I went with black and white so I could bring up the brightness and contrast without having to worry about blowing out the coloring.

I liked this photo on the small insert page, but it was too grainy for 4x6 and I didn't want to add in another page just for it, so I stuck it on the back of a 4x6 journal card and called it good!

Our household fell prey to this ridiculous and cute phone game all about collecting cats, and it was such a big part of our December that I had to include it. The 2x2 page next to that chronicles some of my favorite decorations around the house this year.

Day 21 was the glamorous story of having the flu. While obviously not the most exciting thing to happen all month, I like including it as a reminder that things don't always go according to plan, and sometimes being forced to slow down is not the worst thing that could happen.

I received some beautiful coloring pages from my nieces just in time for Christmas on the 22nd, and even more magically, one of them matched my new decorations perfectly! I taped the number 22 on top so that I could journal on the backside and flip it up to read it without having to remove it from a pocket.

Christmas Eve in my family was always a tradition packed time. We always had appetizers and snack foods for dinner, we opened our gifts from friends, and we ALWAYS watched the Claymation Christmas special that was recorded on a VHS tape decades ago. While the original VHS lives with my parents back in MT, they did manage to find a DVD version so my sister and I can both carry on the traditions in our homes.

We decided to go look at Christmas lights after dinner which was a fun excursion. Normally, we do this earlier in the month, but the 24th was our first opportunity to be all together and it turned out to be the perfect time.

I've always been really disappointed with the lack of Christmas lights in the Seattle area, but this year we found a few neighborhoods that more than made up for that. Lord knows, I cannot resist an over the top theme.

Christmas morning breakfast is an adventure for us because we each have very specific demands based on what we grew up with. That means overnight coffee cake and cinnamon rolls every year, and this year we added in my candied bacon that everyone was craving.

The Christmas morning 2x2 page is one of my favorites in the album. I knew I wanted to include a variety of photos from us opening gifts that morning, but I didn't want to fill pages full of really similar images, so I made one side for Mike and one side for Laurie and then filled in the blank spaces with a cohesive white and gold color scheme to tie it all together. The cat wrapping on the right was my absolute favorite, so I had to include a section.

We had a friend help decorate our tree this year and she agreed to hide the pickle in it for us to find on Christmas morning. Even better, she agreed to come up with a gift for the winner of something she found in the empty mansion she was living in and helping clean out at the time. Laurie found the pickle and won this sweet box of Troll dolls that I will maybe be forever jealous of.

I had a hard time decided how to end the album. I knew I wanted to wrap it up somehow but I didn't have a really concrete story from the night. I did, however, have this ridiculous photo of us all trying to take a group photo and failing miserably that makes me laugh every time, and decided that when in doubt, add the ugly photo of yourself that you can laugh at forever. A quick write up of our dinner is next to that and then it's almost over!

For the final page I chose a picture of my adorable nieces with the Santa beard suckers I sent them, which is one of my favorites of the two of them ever. I also used a picture of my favorite new decorations this year to really tie together what the Holidays looked like to me this year. I don't remember where I found the passage on the right, but it resonated with me so much this season that I knew I had to include it.

And that's the album! I had so much fun with with project and can't wait to do it again this year. For a more in depth walk through check out the video below, and feel free to leave comments on the blog here with questions or comments about any of the details in the album! I would love to do a few tutorials in the future on some of the elements seen here if there is anything you think would be fun to replicate in your own projects.
